Gas Oven Not Igniting: What to Check Before Calling
An oven that will not light does not automatically need a new igniter. The control, ignition system, and fuel supply can produce similar symptoms. You can gather useful information without opening panels or testing energized components.
Record what happens during normal use
If there is no gas odor or other immediate hazard, describe what you have already observed: whether the controls respond, whether the oven starts heating, whether an error appears, and whether the problem affects bake, broil, or both. Do not remove covers to watch the ignition system.
Why a glow does not prove the igniter is working correctly
On ovens that use a glow-bar ignition system, visible glow alone does not establish that the system is operating correctly. Other ovens use different ignition designs. The model number is necessary before choosing tests or replacement parts; a video of another model may not apply to yours.
What a service diagnosis should establish
A technician can identify the ignition design and follow the manufacturer’s testing procedure. Ask what evidence points to the proposed failed component and whether the quoted work includes checking operation afterward. A cold oven can involve a control or supply issue as well as ignition components.
Leave internal testing to a technician
This guide does not provide live electrical tests, gas-valve adjustments, or instructions for removing burner components. Avoid repeatedly attempting to start an oven that is not igniting normally. Use the model-specific owner’s manual for user checks and arrange service if the problem continues.
If you smell gas
Leave the area immediately and call 911 and your gas utility from a safe location. Do not use switches or a phone in the affected area. An appliance repair appointment is not a substitute for responding to a suspected gas leak.
See Southwest Gas guidance for a suspected leak and GE’s model-specific support resources.
